Jim Woodring:
11/10/1952

Born in Los Angeles. He was heavy into drugs and alcoho. 1980 he worked for Ruby Spears animation studio. creator of Smoky the bear




Chris Ware:

28/12/1967

Inspired by Joost Swarte and other "clear line" artists. Has worked for New City and Raw magazine and the New York Times. Famous for his miniature workings, do it yourself kits intergrated in his comics.






Rodolphe Topffer:
31/1/1799 - 8/6/1846

Switzerland.

Writer first. Studied in Paris and became a teacher, he founded a boarding school for boys. He is most famous for his "histoires en images" picture stories that are considered the first in comics genre.






Elzie Crisler Segar:

8/12/1894 - 13/10/1938 American
Inspired by Charlie Chaplin. Popeye is his most famous character.






Charles Schulz:
26/11/1922 - 12/02/2000
One of the most popular and influential humorist comic artists ever. His most famous strip is 'Peanuts'. The most sucessful comic strip in newpaper history.



Maurice Sendak:
10/6/1928

Born in Brooklyn New York. Started illustratoin career in highschool. Studied at Art Students League and co-created 'Atomics for the Millions' in 1947. A writer and illustrator of childrens books, his most famous being 'Where the Wild Things Are'.




MMarjane Satrapi:
1969. Family fleed to Vienna when she was fourteen. Eventually she returned to Iran. 1994 she divorced and moved to France. Her autobiographical 'Persepolis' is the first Iranese graphic novel ever. She is also a writer and illustrator of childrens books.






Gary Panter:
Part of the group that made RAW magazine. Been published in Time and Rolling Stone. Worked on the set of Pee Wee's Playhouse. Most famous works are Jimbo, Adventures in Paradise nd Facetasm.






Winsor McCay:
26/9/1869 - 26/6/1934
One of the fouding fathers of US newspaper comics. Born in Spring Lake, Michigan. Most Famous comic is Little Nemo in SlumberLand.





Lorenzo Mattotti:
24/1/1954
One of the leading Italian comix artists. Most famous for his idiosyncratic artwork. Born in Brescia. Attended Faculty for Architecture in Venice.





Harvey Kurtzman:

3/10/1924 - 21/2/1993

One of the leading artists in American satirical and adult comics. Fouding father of MAD and Help! and co- creator of Little Anny Fanny in Playboy. Attended School of Music and Art in New York. First published work in Tip Top Comics in 1939.




Jack Kirby:

28/8/1917 - 6/2/1994

Nicknamed "The King of American Comics" Born in New York. His career started in 1935 when he worked for Max Fleicher's animation studio. 1939 he joined Eisner-Iger comic shop. Created Capitan America with partner Joe Simon. 1956 he returned to Timely which was now Marvel where he worked with Stan Lee.






Walt Kelly:

25/8/1913 - 18/10/1973
Walt Kelly heavely influenced by his father. He began as a reporter and cartoonist for Bridgepot Pst. In 1935 he joned Walt Disney Studios. He worked as an animator on Dumba and Pinocchip and Fantasia. Did his first comics work for the future DC Comics. Fired from Disney in 1941. His most famous character is Pogo the possum.








Ben Katchor:

1951. Part of the second generation of American underground comix. Generation that got it's inspiration from the punk scene. he teaches at Parsons New School for Design.





George Herriman was born in New Orleans in 1880.Family moved to Los Angelos when he was ten. For the first few years of his career he drew sports and political cartoons. But by the mid decade he was darwing comic strips. His most famous works is probably Krazy Kat.





Jaime Hernandaz:
born 1959

co-created Love and Rockets.
Grew up in California. His main contribution to Love and Rockets was the Locas. About a group of primarily Latino teenagers and it followed them through the early days of Punk scene to the present day.





Gilbert Hernandez:
Born 1957
One of the Hernandez Bros. He and his borthers Jaime and Mario made Lve and Rockets. Alternative comix through the 1980's.






Herge (Georges Remi)
22/05/1907-3/3/1983

Creator of Tintin. From Belgium. Often considered "The most influential European comic artist ever". January 10, 1929 the first episode of Tintin was printed in Le Vingtieme Siecle. First episodes of Tintin contain racist stereotypes. Suffered from depression.







Lyonel Feininger

17/7/1871-13/1/1956

Well known Expressionist and Cubist painter. Son of two professional musicians. Born in New York. Attended Berlin Art Academy and the Colarossi Academy in Paris. Started a career as a cartoonist in 1894. Worked for Harpers Round Table.Lived in Europe and taught at the Bauhaus school until 1937.






Will Eisner:

6/3/1917-3/1/2005

the "God Father of American Comics" Born in Brooklyn, New York to Jewish immigrant parents. Attended De Witt Clinton High School, his first drawings where published in the schools newspaper. His first work 'Harry Karry' and 'The Flame' was published in WOW What a Magazine! in 1936. He used the pen name Willia Rensie. He co-founded Eisner-Iger Studio with Jerry Iger. Hired Jack Kirby amoung other young artists. 1936 joined Quality Comis Group. 1940 he worked on a syndicated 16 page newspaper supplement. This led to the birth of 'The Spirit'.




Julie Doucet:
Born 31/12/1965 Canada
One of the main representatives of the Quebec underground and smallpress scene. Studied plastic arts in Montreal during the 1980's. Began self publishing in 1988. Creating her own underground comix series 'Dirty Plotte'. It was published in English by Drawn and Quaterly which gave her a wider audience.









Art Spiegelman:
Born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1948. Family moved to U.S. Studied cartooning in highschool and started drawing professionally at sixteen.He majored in Art and psychology at Harpur College. Joined the Underground Comix movement. Contributed to REal Pulp, Young Lust, and Bizarre Sex. "Maus" gave his career flight.







Robert Crumb: Robert Dennis Crumb
August 30th 1943
Philadelphia, Penn.

American illustrator known for his distinctive style and his satirical , subversive veiw of the American mainstream. Currently lives in Southern France. As a child he drew homemade comics for his family. A character he made as a child Fred the Cat would become one of his best known characters; Fritz the Cat. Crumb got a job as a greeting card artist in Cleveland, Ohio in 1962.Then he moved to New York making comics trading cards for Topps Gum and then returned to Cleveland.In January 1967 Crumb moved to California and did comics for Yarrowstalks. This led to the first issue of Zap.
